Host A Fun Game Night

by Wanda on October 2, 2016

Looking for fun ideas for spending time with friends? Think about hosting a fun game night! It’s cheaper than heading out to a bar or restaurant, and it’s more fun than just sitting around the table for a typical dinner party. It’s also pretty simple to arrange, which means that you don’t have to spend a lot of time planning and prepping. Here are some basic tips for hosting a fun game night:

  1. Plan your games. Nothing should be set in stone, but it helps to have some idea of what you’ll be playing so you know how many people to invite. You can plan to play board games, card games, or party games- they’re different, but both are fun.
  2. Don’t invite too many people. It’s best to keep the guest list under 10 to avoid it getting too chaotic. And remember that lots of games are only meant for 8 players or so. If you do invite a larger crowd you can break up into groups.
  3. Know your friends. Invite the best mix of friends for this fun event.
  4. Know the rules. Make sure someone knows how to play the game so you won’t have to pause to check the instructions or settle arguments while you’re playing.
  5. Keep it simple. No need to go all out with food and decorating- unless you want to, of course. The focus of the party is the game playing.
  6. Keep food and drinks on the side. A simple buffet is the best menu for this type of party, and keeping the food on a side table helps avoid spills and disasters.
  7. Comfortable seating. Sitting around a coffee table is fun for a casual game night. Set out pillows and cushions to keep your guests comfortable. If you’ll be sitting on chairs around a table, make sure there are enough chairs for all the players.

The most important thing to remember is to have fun! Sure, we all have our stories of game parties gone bad (I was once on the outs with my best friend for months over a game of Risk), but don’t let tension or serious competition ruin this for you. Keep it easy and casual, and you’ll see game nights become a regular event among your friends!

9 New Ways To Use Baby Powder

by Wanda on September 28, 2016

If you don’t already have baby powder in your house, you’ll be rushing out to get some after reading this. Baby powder is great for keeping baby bottoms dry and preventing diaper rash, but it’s so much more than just that. And it’s inexpensive! So take a couple of minutes to read this, and then go get yourself some baby powder and start putting it to good use! One note, though: I suggest you get the cornstarch kind, since talc has been linked to health problems.

  1. Dry shampoo. No time to shampoo? Sprinkle a little powder on your roots and comb through. For more control, pour the powder into your hand and use your fingers to sprinkle it on. Your hair will look and smell fresh for another day.
  2. Pet shampoo. Freshen your pet between baths.
  3. Cool sheets. Sprinkle powder on your sheets on a hot night to keep your sheets cool and dry, and yourself feeling fresh, not sweaty.
  4. Freshen closets. Keep a dish filled with powder in your closet to keep away musty smells.
  5. Fuller lashes. Dust your eyelashes with powder before applying mascara for fuller, plumper looking lashes.
  6. Remove sand. Take some powder on your next beach outing and take home less sand! Sprinkle powder on your sandy legs and brush off sand and powder.
  7. Untangle necklaces. Tangled necklace chains won’t drive you insane anymore! Coat the knots with powder to loosen them up.
  8. Deodorize shoes. Sprinkle powder into your shoes at the end of the day and leave overnight. Shake it out in the morning and enjoy your fresh shoes.
  9. Ant repellent. Safer and cheaper than chemicals! Sprinkle a line of powder around windows, doors, even picnic blankets, and the ants won’t cross over to your side.

For just a few dollars, a bottle of powder can do so much!

Awesome Ideas For Apples

by Wanda on September 25, 2016

If you read the last post you know how awesome apples are for your health, so definitely go with the “apple a day keeps the doctor away” practice. As delicious as apples are, though, eating them plain every day could get a little boring after a while, so here are some other awesome ways to eat them. And if that’s not cool enough for you, check out the other ways you can use apples.

  • Apple pie. Of course you know about this; apple pie is a favorite fall dessert. Make sure you serve it warm with some good vanilla ice cream!
  • Applesauce. I can’t think of an easier or healthier dessert to make than apple sauce. Peel, core, and slice as many apples as you want and put them in a pot. Add a drop of water, some maple syrup, a squirt of lemon juice, and cook until soft but not too mushy. Mash it right in the pot with a spoon for chunky applesauce, or use an immersion blender for a finer texture. I love this hot or cold.
  • Sliced with nut butter. Spread apple slices with almond or peanut butter for a delicious, high protein snack.
  • Apple crisp or cobbler. Another fall fave.
  • Apple chips. Slice thinly and arrange on a baking sheet in a single layer. Sprinkle with cinnamon if you like, and bake at 225 degrees for one hour. Flip over and bake for another hour or until they are crisp.
  • Ripen fruit. Place apples in a bag with unripe fruit. Apples release a gas that speeds up ripening, and your fruit should be ready to eat in a day or so.
  • Fix salty soup. Don’t you hate it when you over-salt your soup? Fix it by adding some apple wedges and cooking for another 10 minutes. The apple will absorb the extra salt and the soup will be perfect.
  • Moist roasted chicken. Place an apple in the cavity of the chicken for moist, delicious results.
  • Soften brown sugar. When your brown sugar gets too hard, an apple can save it! Place it in a sealed bag with an apple wedge for a day.
  • Apple stamps. Here’s a great craft idea for kids: Cut apples in half and cut out the core. Dip in paint to use as stamps with an interesting shape.
  • Face mask. Grate apples and mix with some honey. Apply to face for a few minutes to reduce inflammation and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Who knew?!?

A medium apple has about 80 calories, a satisfying crunch, and tons of good stuff. You can’t go wrong with an apple!
