If there’s a national “whatever” day you’ll want to celebrate, it’s got to be National Chocolate Soufflé Day! Chocolate soufflé is pretty decadent, so it’s not something you’d have every day, but if it’s a national holiday, you  have to participate. You wouldn’t want to be a bad citizen, would you? The other thing about chocolate soufflé is that unless you’re a pretty experienced cook or dessert maker, it can be a little intimidating to make at home.

You can always go out for a chocolaty treat in honor of this special day, but I’ve found a fabulous and easy make-at-home recipe for chocolate soufflé and I’m going to share it with you. Impress yourself with this delicious recipe for easy Chocolate Soufflé from Real Simple. There’s an optional Custard Sauce to serve with it if you want to take it to the next level.

For 2 servings:

Ingredients:

  1. tablespoons butter
  2. tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  3. ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate
  4. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. egg yolks
  6. egg whites
  7. tablespoons sugar
  8. pinch salt
  9. pinch cream of tartar

Directions:

  1. Heat oven to 375° F. Use 1 tablespoon of the butter to grease one 16-ounce or two 8-ounce ramekins. Coat the ramekins with the cocoa, tapping out the excess.
  2. In a large bowl, over a pan of simmering water, melt the chocolate and remaining butter. Stir occasionally until smooth. Remove from heat and add the vanilla. Whisk in the yolks one at a time until smooth. Set aside.
  3. In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites with the sugar, salt, and cream of tartar until stiff (but not dry) peaks form. Gently fold the egg-white mixture into the chocolate. Spoon into the ramekins. (The recipe can be made to this point up to 1 day ahead. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.)
  4. Bake until puffed and set, 40 minutes for a 16-ounce soufflé, 20 minutes for two smaller ones. (If baked directly from the refrigerator, add 5 to 10 minutes.) Serve immediately with Custard Sauce.

Try this recipe today, and then put it in your files because you’re going to want to make it again and again! Happy National Chocolate Soufflé Day!

Household Beauty Hacks

I love beauty products as much as the next girl and I have the cluttered makeup drawer to prove it! But I also love it when you can get really great beauty results using regular products you have around the house. For one thing, you know it’s natural- no dyes or chemicals- which is nice when it’s something you use on your skin. And then there’s also the economical payoff- specialized beauty products can get really expensive, and who doesn’t like to save a few bucks?

Here are some common household products that do double duty as beauty products:

  1. Sea salt: Sea salt has lots of minerals that are beneficial to the skin. It also absorbs toxins like acne-causing bacteria and is an excellent exfoliant. Gently pat onto wet skin and rinse, being very careful not to get in your eyes.
  2. Apple cider vinegar: This household staple balances the skin’s PH and kills germs. Dilute it with water and apply with a cotton ball, or keep in a spray bottle.
  3. Coconut oil: Great moisturizer and antibacterial product. This works so well as a deep hair moisturizer.
  4. Oats: This powerhouse works as an exfoliant, reduces inflammation, relieves itchiness, and leaves skin soft. Pour 1/2 cup into a bath and soak, or make a mask for your face.
  5. Sugar: Mix some sugar into your favorite body wash for an in-shower body scrub.
  6. Baking soda: Another household staple that is a super beauty product! Use it to get rid of odors, make a paste and use it to zap a zit, remove shampoo build-up in your hair, and add to toothpaste to help remove surface stains.
  7. Olive oil: Excellent skin cleanser and moisturizer.
  8. Green tea bags: The anti-oxidant ingredients here help reduce puffiness around your eyes and get rid of dark circles. Steep and chill a couple of tea bags and rest on your eyes for a few minutes.
  9. Lemon juice: Use it to lighten dark spots on skin and remove yellow stains from nails.
  10. Tartar control toothpaste: Works great to polish silver jewelry!
  11. Cucumber: Apply cucumber slices to your eyes to soothe and get rid of bags and circles.
  12. Dryer sheets: Gently rub your hair to freshen and remove static.
  13. Toilet paper: Don’t spend money on expensive skin blotting sheets- toilet paper works just as well to absorb oil from your face.
  14. Cooking spray: Use the unflavored kind to quick-dry nail polish.
  15. Cornstarch: Makes a great dry shampoo.
  16. Vaseline: Make fragrance last longer on your skin by applying a dab of Vaseline on your pulse points before spraying perfume

You’ll be surprised by how well they work and you’ll be happy with the money you save. Put some away so you can splurge on that absolutely fabulous lipstick you just can’t replicate at home!

How to Stop Impulse Buying

by Wanda on February 21, 2016

You know that jacket you just have to have? So what if it will set you back a couple of hundred dollars-  it’s really fabulous! Or the great armchair that will look so great in the den, even though you have a perfectly good one there already- maybe you should just buy it anyway… Are any of us immune to impulse buying? You feel like you have to buy that item- in the moment- and then you realize you never really use it, you don’t really need it, and it sort of messed with your budget. We all know what that’s like! So how do you stay in control when a buying urge hits? Here are some smart ways to stop impulse buying:

1. Have a list: Always shop with a list: the stores you need to visit and the items you need to buy. This will help you stay focused on what you really need.

2. Think about your long-term goals: Remind yourself if you’re saving for a vacation, a house, retirement, or a special pair of shoes.

3. Give yourself a time limit: When you have to be out shopping, give yourself a certain amount of time to spend in the store and you’ll be less susceptible to becoming distracted.

4. Use cash: This way you can only spend what you have.

5. Budget for small splurges: Plan for rewards and you won’t feel deprived, which will help diminish the urge to buy impulsively.

6. Make yourself wait: When you see something you want impose a waiting period to see how badly you really want it. Wait a week, or 30 days and you’ll have time to make a rational opinion. Read reviews, talk to other people, and think it over really well before you buy.

7. Stay away from the mall: If you need something, go to the specific store and leave right away.

8. Ask yourself questions: How badly do you really want this item? How will it improve your life? How happy will it make you ? Will it make things easier for you? Can you really afford it?

9. Take stock of what you have: Go and spiff up something you already own. Or make a rule that if you buy something new you have to give something away. You might develop a new appreciation for what you already have and decide you’d rather hold on to that than get something new.

10. Don’t browse online: If you need to buy something, search for it specifically and then log off.

11. Unsubscribe: Opt out of emails from retailers that will only tempt you to buy things you don’t need.

12. Hold on to receipts: You can always return something if you change your mind.

13. Recognize marketing tricks: Just because an item is on sale doesn’t make it a good buy if you don’t need it or like it. And something that looks great on a model or mannequin might not work for you at all.

14. Know who to shop with: Don’t go shopping with friends who have unlimited budgets or bad spending habits.

15. Don’t rationalize small purchases: Just because your impulse buy was inexpensive doesn’t make it okay; you still spent money on something you don’t need, and small purchases do add up!

16. Don’t shop hungry: Or sad, angry, or stressed. You’ll be more vulnerable and less able to withstand temptation. Don’t let your emotions control your shopping.

17. Take a deep breath: Compose yourself. Stop, take a deep breath, and compose yourself and the urge to spend might pass.

Which of these ideas is most helpful to you? You might find that you can use a few, or even all of them to curb your impulse buying. If you really can’t control your spending and it’s becoming a real problem in your life, you might want to consider getting some professional help.
